How the Robomow RS630 lawn mower works
Once your Robomow arrives, you’ll first have to install it before you can start enjoying it. The installation process involves pegging down the perimeter wire and setting up the charging station. This will take a few hours but it’s a one-time set-up that’ll make your robotic mower to work so it’s worth it.
Once installed and it’s time to mow, the RS630 robotic mowers will drive out of the charging base and onto the lawn. Using two sets of rotating stainless steel blades that provide a razor-sharp cut, it mows randomly and will initially miss some parts but it eventually circles back to finish those areas.
These blades also have no problem taking down heavy grass. While mowing, it completely mulches the grass to very tiny clippings that disappear into the lawn and act as manure.
This robot mower has a cutting width of 22 inches, which is much wider than most other robotic mowers, thanks to its dual blade system and this tremendously reduces the overall cutting time.
It uses sensors to detect obstacles on its path. When the RS630 comes in contact with an obstacle it immediately shuts down the motor and stops the blades, then it moves away and continues in a different direction, this is an excellent pet and child safety feature. The RS630 automatically shuts down its motor once you lift it, you can also use the emergency stop button to shut it down.
To prevent strangers from operating your robot, this robot mower allows you to set up your own PIN code for the mower so you alone can control it. The RS630 has a 400W motor which is powered by a 26-volt lithium battery, which takes about 2 hours to charge and lasts for a little over an hour before needing a recharge.
The robot will return to its charging base when it needs to recharge its battery. These robot lawn mowers are also weather-proof and have a rain sensor that allows them to detect the rain or high humidity and return to the base station to seek shelter. With this kind of smart technology, you won’t have to worry about your robot at all.
Performance
Robomow RS630 moves randomly while cutting and will initially miss some places but it eventually circles back to cut those areas. It completely mulches the grass leaving behind very tiny clippings that disappear into the roots of the grass and quickly decompose into manure for your lawn.
The onboard efficiency calculator measures and estimates the approximate time needed to complete a mowing cycle once you enter the size of your lawn and it takes about one hour to mow 0.75 acres.
When it comes to slopes and inclinations, you can trust this riding mower to do an amazing job, with its floating deck and standard wheels it drives over sloped lawns without a moment’s hesitation and it doesn’t flip.
And if it comes in contact with an obstacle say a rock, it automatically kills its motor and stops the blades, then it turns to another direction and continues. This is an excellent safety feature that prevents it from hurting anyone in case it comes in contact with a child or pet.
Occasionally this robot mower will get stuck in some tight spot, but it will work hard to free itself and sometimes the drive wheels may not provide enough traction to pull it out and you’ll have to come to rescue it.
Despite being able to handle slopes and inclinations, the RS630 robot mowers will get stuck in holes and tight spots. If you have a yard with rough and uneven terrain expect to rescue it at least once a week.
This 400W motor is powered by a 26V 6.0 Ah Lithium Bromide battery while it takes 2 hours to charge and runs for only about 80 to 100 minutes.
Ease of set-up and use
Just like most other robotic mowers, the Robomow RS630 has to be installed before use and this takes hours.
You have to lay down the boundary wire and set up the charging base before you can get the robot to work on your lawn, this makes the set-up process a little complex and you may want some help. Otherwise, roll up your sleeves and get to work and expect to spend no less than 2 hours laying down the boundary wire (creating the mowing area) and installing the docking station.
Although the installation takes a few hours, it’s really not so difficult and anyone with the ability to follow step-by-step instructions can do this, with or without technical skills. It comes with 1,300 feet of perimeter wire for the installation, enough for marking out an entire 0.75 acres of garden which is the maximum lawn size it’s built for. The wire boundary if essential, as it keeps your machine within its mowing zones. This doesn’t affect its mowing ability, but the boundaries keep the robots from accidentally escaping gardens.
Once it’s installed, the robot will take up the work from there and will pretty much become independent. The cutting height setting can be adjusted using a knob and you can set it between 0.78 to 3.2 inches.
Robomow RS630 comes with a user-friendly and intuitive mobile app from which you can set mowing schedules, customize settings and program your robot. From this app, you can also monitor the mower’s progress as it works and check the battery.
Reliability
RS630 Robomow does a good job of keeping any 0.75-acre backyard in great shape and it completes a mowing cycle in just an hour. It also takes care of the edges of your garden by mowing along the perimeter wire.
However, this robot tends to break down just after months of use. The axles easily wear out making it difficult for the wheels to drive smoothly or accurately make turns.
The spring rod which holds the axle to the motor tends to cut through the hole and the plastic part of the bearing, while the ball bearing also corrodes completely, and the wheels come off.
Just after one year of use, the entire drive motor assembly may need to be replaced and this cost between $300 to $400.
Ongoing maintenance
Like almost every other machine, maintaining this robot immensely contributes to excellent cutting results and proper performance. For robotic lawn mowers, the major parts that need replacements are blades, batteries, and some wearable parts.
The blades need to stay sharp to cut properly and to make sure of this they need to be replaced at least once a year or after two cutting seasons. The IR-based sensors will also need to be cleaned. An accumulation of dust and dirt will affect its performance, which means the robot will be unable to find its charging base.
If your mower runs in circles until the battery dies and you’ll have to carry it to the charging base, then the IR sensors need to be cleaned. To avoid this, clean these sensors at least once a year.
Robomow RS630 has a battery life expectancy of 5,000 full charges and it’s estimated to last between 3 to 5 years before needing a replacement.
Proper storage during winter is also very important. The lawnmower and the charging base will have to be taken indoors and stored in a dry place over the winter, this prevents damage from deep piles of snow.
Extra Purchases and ongoing costs
Although the Robomow RS630 comes as a complete set and needs no extra purchases to work, these robots do require maintenance and ongoing costs.
But the good news is that you won’t have to make these changes every year and the RS630 comes with a 1-year warranty, so the first year is already taken care of.
