Let’s take a closer look
How the Petkit Pura X litter box works
One of the woes of being a pet parent is constantly having to clean up after our pets. Of course, we all do it for the love we have for those adorable cuties, but I’m yet to meet a pet parent who truly enjoys scooping cat waste, and literally, no one looks forward to scooping pet waste.
Well, it’s no wonder that the market is seeing more influx of robotic self-cleaning cat litter boxes. Since the Litter-Robot hit the market, there have been many more like it, and the Petkit Pura X is one self-cleaning cat litter box that shares a similar design and operates much the same way as the Litter-Robot.
To be fair, the Petkit Pura X looks nothing like the Litter Robot, but it has the same cleaning mechanism as the latter. Petkit Pura X is essentially a big box with an inner rotating globe that sits on a base that doubles as the waste bin.
The inner globe is what holds the cat litter, and that’s where your cat goes to do their business. To use this automatic cat litter box, your pet steps into the globe and takes a poop. An OLED display screen on the litter box makes it easy to check the status and data.
When your cat exits the globe, the box begins a countdown, after which the cleaning cycle is triggered. During each cleaning, the globe slowly rotates through an angle, this movement pushes the clean litter through a filter and into a side compartment, while the clumped litter and solid waster fall through a hole to enter the waste bin, which is lined with a custom waste bag from Pet kit.
With the waste deposited into a collection bin, the inner globe slowly returns to its original position, bringing back the unused litter with it, so your pet has a clean bed of litter ready for the next time.
Clumped litter and solid waste accumulate in the waste bin, which you will have to empty once or twice every week, depending on how many cats you have and how frequently they use the cat box. And to dispose of the waste, open the drawer and simply tie off the waste bag and throw it into the trash can.
For both safety and efficiency, the Pura automatic self-cleaning cat litter box is equipped with sensors that detect your cat’s presence and will not cycle when your cat is inside or close to the box.
The Petkit Pura X also comes with a smartphone Petkit app for remote control and monitoring, plus you get a real-time notification on your cat’s litter tray use.
Performance
Petkit Pura X litter box is a great automatic cat litter box for homes with feline family members. This self-cleaning cat litter box is designed to be very efficient and operates very quietly. The device runs smoothly with only very little input from you, and it’s extremely good at detecting pets, whether they are inside it or just hanging around the unit.
The infrared sensors are both for the safety of your cat and the efficiency of the device. When using this cat litter box, it’s recommended that you use only clumping litter, so that each time your pet uses it, the clumps will be filtered off leaving behind only fresh litter.
Petkit Pura X litter box also comes with a deodorizing liquid to help minimize the amount of cat poop smell coming from it, and it’s programmed to automatically spray a little bit of the liquid after your pet has used it. However, this doesn’t necessarily stop all the smell, and you can add a deodorizer to the waste bin to help. The included sensor pad is also great for trapping litter from your cat’s paws.
This cat petkit pura x litter box also has integrated sensors that detect your cat’s weight whenever they step into the inner globe, cat’s weight is displayed on the unit, and you can also see the notification in the Petkit app. If you have more than one cat, you can keep track of their toilet habit with their individual weight.
The unit also gives you updates on the amount of litter in it, and when to add more. And when adding litter to the box, be careful not to exceed the maximum fill line, as this interferes with the weight sensors measurement and smooth cycling of the unit.
Limitations
Although the Petkit Pura X is an impressive device, it does have a couple of drawbacks that may be dealbreakers for some. The first one you may notice is how big the box is. It’s not like the regular litter box and has a big footprint. Plus, it’s quite tall and the opening is high, which means that cats have to be able to jump into the box to use it.
However, if your cat is unable to jump either because they are too small or old, you can remedy this situation by investing a small stool that will enable them to get into the box without much stress. The opening is also small, and bigger cats may find it difficult to comfortably get inside the globe.
The litter box also has a deodorizing liquid which is sprayed during each cleaning cycle to eliminate the bad smell, but it really doesn’t completely odor control, especially when you have multiple pets going in there. For this, purchasing an additional deodorizer, like the arm and hammer deodorizer, and placing it in the waste bin can help neutralize the bad smell.
A third drawback is that the unit continues to cycle even after the 7L waste tray is full, and this causes it to overflow and spill cat waste all over the floor. But to be fair, it does notify you via the Petkit app when the waste bin is full and needs to be emptied. However, if you were away from home, and were unable to promptly empty the waste bin, expect to meet an ugly scene when you get home.
Finally, the Pet Kit tends to jam up while cycling, this happens after it has been used for a while. This is probably an indication that it may need complete cleaning, but it can be frustrating, especially because the customer support isn’t very responsive, even with a 1-year warranty.
Ease of set up and use
This automatic self-cleaning cat litter box has a very simple design and is very set-up. It comes pre-assembled, which makes the whole setup process very easy. From the moment you unbox it till your first use doesn’t take more than 10 minutes.
Inside the box, you will find a detailed manual with instructions on how to set it, plus a QR code that you can scan to watch a step-by-step set-up video. You will also need to calibrate the internal scale before the first use, this has to be done when the unit is still empty. After set-up, you will need to download the Petkit app and sign in, WiFi set-up is also easy, however, it only uses 2.4GHz WiFi.
The app allows you to customize the setting to improve your experience, and you can choose between the two cleaning modes; auto-cleaning mode and scheduled cleaning mode. You can set the type of litter you’ll be using and ensure you never fill past the MAX line to prevent any weight-related errors (suggested max cat litter capacity in cylinder box is 5L), or you set how often you want the unit to dispense the deodorizer, etc.
Reliability
The Petkit Pura X litter box is made of high quality and durable materials, it has a quiet operation and won’t scare your pets. The cat litter box does an impressive scooping job and doesn’t leave anything behind. When it cycles, it ensures that no residual waste is left inside the machine.
Besides the litter box that’s included in the package, you can also use any litter of your choice, but be sure to make that indication in the app so that the settings of the unit can be adjusted according. The app gives you real-time notifications and updates about the unit, you will be able to monitor how often your kitties use it and when you’ll need to perform some maintenance.
Ongoing Maintenance
The Petkit Pura X automatic litter box is easy to clean and maintain, with very minimal parts. It’s important that you do a thorough cleaning every once in a while, and this is easy to do. But first, you will need to let the litter level in the unit drop to maybe 30% or lower because the unit needs to be empty for a deep clean.
While it’s easy to clean this robot, you also have to be extra careful to ensure that water doesn’t get into the electrical components and mess up the gadget. With this in mind, the best way to give the Pet kit Pura X a deep clean is by using a towel dipped into a mixture of warm water and detergent.
To clean it, first, remove the inner globe and use a damp towel to clean the entire unit. Make sure to wring out all the water from the towel. Carefully clean the optical sensors to avoid potential errors. Once the unit is completely clean, leave it out to dry before assembling the parts.
Extra Purchases and ongoing costs
Petkit Pura X litter box comes well packaged in a big box as a complete unit. It has everything you’ll need to get it up and running included in the box. Besides the robot, you will find a roll of plastic litter bags, a Petkit air-purifying refill, a Petkit sensor pad and foot mat for your cat’s paws, a power cord, a box of Tofu cat litter, a user’s guide, all in the package.
Eventually, you will need to replace some of these items like the waste bags, the cat litter, and the deodorizer. You can choose to replace the litter bags with regular garbage bags, and replace the Tofu litter with your preferred litter type. But the company recommends that you use only the deodorizer from Petkit Pura X with this unit, and a replacement deodorizer should be one from Petkit Pura X.
A couple of alternatives to consider
If you are still not convinced that the Petkit Pura X is the perfect self-cleaning litter box for you and your kitty, especially if you’re concerned about price, here are other awesome litter boxes that may appeal to you.
Our first recommendation is a much cheaper all-around automatic cat litter box with self-washing and self-flushing features; the Cat Genie A.I. This self-cleaning automatic litter box is designed to help cat parents automate the process of scooping and disposing of cat waste.
Cat Genie litter box is programmed to perform cleaning cycles that automatically scoop cat waste, flush it down the drain, disinfect and wash the litter box, and finally blow dry with hot air. The Cat Genie litter box uses washable, reusable litter granules and a biodegradable deodorizing and sanitizing solution to kill germs and odor control. The washable granules are cat-safe, septic-safe, and do not need to be changed frequently.
Another great choice that’s just as reliable and efficient as the Petkit Pura X, and also slightly cheaper, is the Litter Robot 3. The Litter Robot has the same operating mechanism as the Pura X. After your cat uses the Litter-Robot, it starts a countdown that triggers the clean process.
This cleaning cycle proceeds to automatically separate solid waste from clean litter, with the solid waste going into a waste bin. The scooping process automatically removes waste, so your pet always has a clean bed of litter. The Litter-Robot is also equipped with an odor-absorbing component and carbon filters, which helps to reduce the smell of cat litter.
FAQs
Yes, the Pura X cat litter box can be used by more than one cat, provided that each cat doesn’t weigh more than 18lbs. Also, you should know that if 2 or more cats are using it, then the waste bin will need to be emptied more frequently. The higher the number of pets using the litter box, the more frequently it should be emptied and cleaned.
Does this automatic cat litter box work with pretty litter?
Pretty litter is a non-clumping super-absorbent litter made from silica gel and safe for cats. Pretty litter has a sand-like texture and works great with many automated self-cleaning litter boxes. Since it’s a non-clumping kitty litter, it’s not the best for the Petkit Pura X.
What litter to use with the Petkit Pura X litter box?
The best type of kitty litter for Petkit Pura X is high-quality clumping litter, which can include natural plant-based litter, bentonite litter, or a combination of both. If it is a clumping litter, yes. Otherwise, not ideal. crystal cat litter shouldn’t be used.
What kind of sand should I use for cat litter?
Sand can work as a litter substitute and you can use it in your automatic self-cleaning cat litters box as an alternative to traditional cat litter. It’s better to use a type of sand with a very sandy texture or clay-based fine sand. The type of sand used in a kid’s sandbox is perfect for your cat litter box.
Will adding a step stool interfere with the sensors?
No, this doesn’t affect the efficacy of the sensors. Adding a step stool is actually great for our cats if they are small, old, sick with arthritis, or just unable to make the leap into the Pura X litter box. A small step stool will help your cat easily get in and out of the Pet kit Pura X.
How long does the air freshener last, and how would you know when to replace it?
This will depend on how many cats you have using the Pet Kit litter box. However, you can expect a bottle of deodorizing liquid to last for a couple of months. And the app lets you know when it needs to be replaced.
Final thoughts
Now, here comes the hard question; should you buy the PetKit Pura X?
With a price tag of almost $600, the PetKit Pura X litter box is certainly an expensive gadget. However, you have to take into account the convenience of never having to scoop cat waste again. Plus the amount of time it will save you in the long run.
Conclusion automatic cat litter box
Petkit Pura X litter box has its limitations, it is still a great automatic cat litter box, one of the best and top-selling on the market right now. In fact, all the similar brands and models have their limitations too. But we believe that this one is one of the top choices. So, in conclusion, yes we recommend it.
It’s certainly a worthy investment for cat owners who are really interested in delegating the gross waste scooping chore. But if you’re working with a smaller budget, you can check out similar products like the Cat Genie and Litter-Robot 3.
