Buyers Guide & FAQs

What features should I look for in a robot vacuum cleaner for wooden floors?

Cartoon image of a man looking puzzled to represent looking for the Best Robot Vacuum for Wood Floors

This is a very valid question to ask yourself before making that purchase! And to find the right answers, you’ll have to consider what type of hard floors you have; hardwood floors, softwood, tiles or concrete.

You also need to consider how big your home is, whether you have pets and how often you intend to use the robot. With all these in mind, identifying the perfect robot vacuum for you becomes less confusing.

For wooden floors, you’ll want a robot with smooth and rubberized wheels to avoid scratching the floors, a strong suction force for trapping all dirt particles and hair especially if you have pets, and a HEPA filter for removing allergens from the air.

You should also consider the efficiency and convenience of the robot vacuum, smart features like scheduling for customized cleanings, Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile app, dirt detect, spot cleaning for spills, self-emptying bin or compatibility with Alexa all make a robotic vacuum much easier to use and extra convenient, plus easy maintenance and availablity of replacement parts.

Key points for consideration before buying robot vacuums

Smart Navigation

You certainly don’t want a robot that’ll keep running into objects in your home and probably damage or dent delicate items. Any truly smart home device should be able to detect objects in its way and move away without having to first bump into it. Robots can detect an array of objects using either laser or optical sensors and these are both good at detecting obstacles. Bots with lasers are often less expensive and can work in the dark but those with cameras and optical sensors will need light to ‘see’ what’s on their way.

Suction Power

Wooden and hard floors don’t really need much suction force and even robots with suction power of only 300 Pa will do a good job. But when you have pets that shed tonnes of hair on a daily and track dirt on the floors, then you surely need a powerful suction to get rid of all that.

Brushes

For a robot vacuum to be able to loosen dirt from the floor it needs brushes to do the actual sweeping. For most botvacs, a main roller brush plus two side brushes loosen dirt and debris and lift them towards the suction. You want these brushes to have soft bristles that are tangle-free which are great for picking up strands of pet hair.

Floor Types

If you have softwood floors with sealants or specialty floors like marble or granite, you need specific bots that have brushes with soft bristles. Brush rolls with hard and stiff bristles could scratch the sealant or grout on your floors and probably ruin it.

Battery Life

Generally robot vacuums with a longer lasting batteries work for much longer before needing a recharge, this is very important in botvacs for large homes since that have no power cords. Auto-recharge and resume is also an important feature. It enables the robot to get a recharge when the battery drops significantly and return to complete the cleaning after the recharge before finally retiring to the docking station.

Dustbin Size

For robotic vacuums, the bigger the bin the better, because the less often it needs to be emptied. this doesn’t matter for robots that automatically empties their bins. But if you have to manually empty the bin of your robot, you need one with more than the average dustbin size of 0.5 liters.

Mopping Feature

This is optional, but it’s a good feature in a bot. Some models will use microfiber pads to clean the floor as dry mopping, while others will use wet the fibers or spray clean. This additional cleaning with wet fibers will definitely leave your floors much shinier than before.

FAQs

Are robot vacuums worth it?

Robotic vacuums take care of the mundane task of vacuuming your home, so they are certainly worth it. These devices automatically vacuum surfaces and will save you lots of hours every week in house cleaning, not to mention the effort and stress if you have a family. Most have advanced features such as Wi-Fi connectivity and app control, camera or laser mappings, scheduling options, voice commands, etc.

What is the Best Robotic Vacuums for Hardwood Floors?

The average robotic vacuum cleaner performs better on hard floors, since hard floors do not require much vacuum power or special tangle-free brushes. However, some robot vacuum brands still perform better than others on wooden floors. All the robots on our list are great for wooden floors, but the best vacuum cleaners for hardwood floors on this list include the Eufy 11S, Neato D7 and the classy iRobot Roomba S9+.

Will robot vacuums scratch hardwood floors?

Robot vacuums are generally safe for hardwood floors, they are designed to clean wooden floor without scratching them and their wheels and brush rolls do not scratch wooden floor surfaces. However, if there are grains of sand or bits of plastic get stuck in the brush or wheels as they clean, these may scratch some wood floors. But this rarely happens.

How often do I need to clean my wooden floor with my robotic vacuum?

To keep your floors looking their best every time, you have to clean daily or at least once every few days. Thankfully, many robotic vacuums allow you to schedule cleaning times, so you can set an ideal daily or weekly cleaning schedule for you.

Best robot vacuums for hardwood floors: final thoughts

Sweeping, dusting and mopping your wood floors may be necessary but this doesn’t make it any less tiring and tedious!

And you also don’t want to be leaving in a debris-filled hole that can easier pass as an animal’s den. So why not let one of the best robot vacuums do the job for you while you handle other important stuff!

If you have a big multi-story home with large rooms, the Roborock S6 is a great investment. Coredy R750 is another excellent choice but if you want one that’ll nicely fit into your budget, then consider getting Eufy g30.
